Takeaways

  • 20 different sectors have been in the top 10 largest sectors by market cap at some point from 2008 to 2018 implying significant churn in investor interest
  • However, the current top 3 market cap sectors, Banking, IT Consulting & Software, Pharmaceuticals in addition to Electric Utilities have been in the top 10 every year from 2008 to 2018
    • Interesting to see, in spite of the unpopularity of the Pharma sector over the last year, overall it saw a decline of only 10% thus retaining it’s #3 position for the 5th consecutive year
  • Telecom Services, Realty, Electric Utilities, Iron & Steel Products and Mining have seen the most drastic drops in relative ranking
    • Telecom: Courtesy over-regulation and Reliance Jio, total Market Cap in 2008 was ₹2,42,849 Cr which has stayed almost static at ₹2,28,916 Cr in March 2018
    • Realty: Down 67% from ₹2,34,698 Cr in 2008 to ₹1,55,039 Cr in 2018. CAGR of -4%
    • Electric Utilities: From ₹3,54,858 Cr (2008) to ₹4,49,228 Cr (2018). Marginal CAGR of 2.4% as the overall value of listed companies in India grew at 18%
  • Housing Finance has been a fast growth sector going from ₹15,425 Cr in 2008 to ₹4,40,868 Cr in 2018, a whopping 29X growth at 40% CAGR
  • There has been a gradual decline of the top 10 sectors share of the universe, from 63% in 2008 to under 50% for the first time in 2018
